What Beside Every Successful Man Is:

Put simply, Beside Every Successful Man is a guide—based on extensive economic, sociological, and anecdotal research—that shows wives how to help their husbands reach greater success at work.

There are lots of different reasons a woman might want to apply the skills, education, and experience she has gained over the years to helping her husband achieve more professionally and financially.  Love jumps most readily to mind for me!  But there is also the fact that a great number of women with children (about 80 percent) say they would prefer to work part-time or fewer hours.

Everyone knows that supporting a family on anything less than two full-time incomes has become an incredible challenge in the 21st century.  So for those 80 percent of moms, seeing their husbands do well is a do or die situation.  Either their husbands do find a way to provide the majority of the family income, or their own dreams of being able to spend most of their time caring for their homes and children dies.

So while Beside Every Successful Man offers principles and examples that can benefit any woman who wants to help her husband earn more and achieve more, it especially speaks to women who would like to prioritize their time at home over their time in the workplace—whether that means working fewer hours, taking a couple of years out of the rat race, or not working at all.

What Beside Every Successful Man Isn't:

In the last few years women have had to put up with a lot of books, news reports, and so-called experts telling them how to live their lives.  When it comes to women and the media, everything these days seems to be analyzed through a “Mommy Wars” lens.  Which side in the Mommy War have you taken?  Which side should you take? Most women, I believe, are sick of it!

We all want to do what’s best for our husbands, our children, and ourselves.  And we have all found different ways of working out what “the best” means.  Despite what we see on television, read in books, and hear on the radio every day, I think, for the most part, we all manage to respect and encourage each other despite any differences we might have in how we manage our lives. So what Beside Every Successful Man isn’t is a manifesto telling you or any woman what you should want.

It doesn’t shame women who want full-time careers, it doesn’t lecture women who don’t.  It simply offers wives—ALL wives—proven techniques to help their husbands—ALL husbands—excel in his career (yes, even those card-carrying members of the slacker generation!)

PRAISE FOR BESIDE EVERY SUCCESSFUL MAN

One of their "Three to Read." "Basham shows how helping your husband, rather than being subservient or demeaning, can be a great way to use your gifts and create a succesful marriage.  It's a win-win for both spouses."

—Publisher’s Weekly

"This is a provocative, persuasive and important book.
—Michael Medved, Nationally Syndicated Talk Radio Host and Columnist, USA Today

“In this brave, helpful book, Megan Basham shows women how to be crucial to a strong team rather than just a solitary star.  Perhaps more important, she gives them the dignity and tools to break free from feminist dogma and choose their own path.  I suffered feminist guilt when I minimized my psychology practice to become my husband's editor and networker and a more involved mom -- even though I loved it and gained an irreplaceable role in my marriage and my kids' lives.  Thank you, Megan, for giving women the gumption and the tools to team up with their husbands rather than compete with them.”
—Diane Medved, Ph.D., author of The Case Against Divorce and The American Family

“Without using the word, Megan Basham has rediscovered the Biblical notion of ‘helpmeet,’ the wife whose intimate partnership with her husband operates not only in their family but also in her support for his work. She explores what this role consists of and how it draw it draws a couple closer. There’s food for thought here for any wife, including one who has her own career.”
—Claudia Anderson, Managing Editor, The Weekly Standard

"This is a wise and inspirational guide for every woman (and man) who wants more out of family life than is often experienced in the conventional two-career household."
Neil Gilbert, Professor of Social Welfare, University of California, Berkeley

“Megan Basham offers wise and eloquent counsel for those willing to ignore popular opinion as they pursue family happiness.”
—Marvin Olasky, editor-in-chief, World Magazine

"Basham’s book tells us three timely truths you will not hear anywhere else: On average, highly educated wives play a crucial role in their husband’s career success, women who let their husbands take the lead in breadwinning enjoy happier marriages, and couples who focus on common goals enjoy happier and more stable marriages.  So husbands and wives, take careful note of this engaging and important new book.”
—Dr. W. Bradford Wilcox, Director of the Marriage Matters Project
